As a retired US Marine I can explain it very simply. We build up our military strength for the simple reason of deterring hostile actions from bad people. The stronger we are the less likely anyone would be foolish enough to attack us. It is no different than having police to reduce crime and keep people safe from criminals. If there are police at a bank, criminals are less likely to rob that bank. As long as bad people exist in the world, there will be a need to have good people who are capable of defeating them and keeping good people safe.

I’m with you I don’t want people to get hurt. However Military should protect you and your country… again it’s just the US Military. If we all would just leave each other alone then no Military would have this much. But that’s not going to happen.

Did she just say Americans pay to get bad education whereas Russia has free education? I’m confused at this lady’s passive aggressiveness without doing proper research. The U.S has the best educational institutions in the world which is what makes them capable of such creations. The point of them being prepared like this isn’t just for themselves, it also serves to able to help their allies as well. This is not something I expect Russians to understand since they seem inherently selfish and don’t seem to know or care about saving anybody but themselves. It’s ironic for a Russian to mention the cost of living here yet, so many Russians along with Ukrainians resort to being mail order brides in order to live here. It’s annoying to see people talk about Americans without actually taking the time to understand us. People come from all over the world to not only get educated in the states but also to live here.

We need this to defend the world from Russia and China.

Nothing is free in any nation. Marxist, Communist, Socialist nations make you pay for everything that is "free" through exorbitant income taxes.

"Why do we put so much money into our military?" Simply put: We know freedom has a price, and we are willing to pay it to maintain it. When we decided not to get involved with the world's issues, we got pulled into it anyway. So now we take a proactive approach to world issues. We learned from the past and we refuse to let it happen again. It's not that we want a war. We just intend to make war against us so expensive that no one will want to start it.

I know it looks bad, but it's called "Peace through strength". The more power you have, the less likely you are to have to use it.

Nobody ever wants war except evil people. It is always good to be prepared for different circumstances like Japan hitting us in Pearl Harbor but also to aid our allies. I don’t think any one ever wants to go Nuclear except that one person that is insane…like North Korea. People still remember what happened to Japan and after the MOAB was dropped in Afghanistan people saw there are other non nuclear weapons in our arsenal and hopefully it keeps people at bay. With humans war will always be inevitable and it is spread all through history with evil people doing evil things but also the majority of people don’t hate the other sides people. I have been to Iraq 3 times and Afghanistan once and I made life long friends with people from both countries. The leaders of different countries drag their people into war

Nobody in general wants war. But you just need one person with to much power that wants to create drama and that is the reason why countries do have military. Since dawn of humanity different groups of people have tried to kill others to get their resources, and it has been happening until today. The US is thankfully the deterrent right now. Otherwise they would have been many more wars than what we have seen. It's mad, yes, but goodwill won't keep peace in the world either.

The U.S. spends so much on it's military mainly for defense because there are leaders from other countries that don't like the U.S. and have made it clear they would fight the U.S. but the U.S. military makes them think it's probably not a good idea so they leave them alone. Look at what Putin is doing to Ukraine, that's why countries near Russia are starting to increase their militaries and why others are wanting to join NATO.
